Man confesses to sex offences involving boys at summer camp
A man who spiked candy with tranquilliser and gave them to children at a summer camp in the region has admitted sexual crimes against two young males who were nine and ten years old.
The accused was taken into custody after eight youngsters and one adult fell ill at Stathern Lodge in mid-summer.
The elderly man, from Ruddington in Nottinghamshire, confessed to a total of 17 charges when he appeared at the judicial center on the end of the week.
Yet, he denied a single sexual charge he was accused of, which was involving a nine-year-old child.
The accused was kept in jail before a further hearing on 28 November.
'Candy game'
Mary Prior KC, prosecuting, detailed the criminal behavior to the judicial body.
She stated his targets were under-privileged children who were participating in a summer program which he operated.
The man conducted a "candy game" with the children, the legal counsel explained, in which he would enter the children's bedrooms when they were preparing to sleep and request they to eat sweets "rapidly".
She informed the proceedings the man had conducted this practice with the children "for many years", and youngsters had earlier experienced illness the following morning.
She stated the man had been able to explain this over a long period as the children being "overexcited from fun", until his stepson had concerns in recently.
The legal representative continued: "In the summer" his family member had suspicions about the activities, with valid cause.
"They decided to have a look in the man's possessions."
Mrs Prior KC said materials including infant oil, petroleum jelly and syringes were discovered, and his stepson notified the authorities about his suspicions.
She explained the man continued to conduct the "sweet game" with six children that night - Saturday 26 July - and they were all ill the subsequent day.
"The police had not arrived by that stage," she stated further.
The regulatory agency, the Independent Office for Police Conduct, had stated that it was reviewing law enforcement's management of the incident.
The legal representative said the minors were struggling to walk due to being ill, so the stepson notified the authorities a second time.
She explained Ruben then conducted the "sweet game" in a space of five children.
