Shifting from Praise to Rage: Conservative Reaction to Jeffrey Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative reactions to the partial disclosure of files involving the Jeffrey Epstein case have been mixed, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the prominent presence of former President Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while others lamented how heavy redactions portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.

Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Hyperbole

Administration representatives justified the heavily censored sections with intense hyperbole. “Never in American the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been so transparent with the American people about such a delicate law enforcement matter,” stated Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a six-page letter describing the censorship procedure.

Concerns Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's name and likeness are visible in portions of the documents, the extensive redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden beneath them. A number of conservative lawmakers swiftly called for increased openness.

“People are furious and walking away,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.

Via a online statement, Republican Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship break the statute, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Unfortunately, this document release egregiously does not adhere to both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.

A Faction of Conservative Figures Swing Behind the Release

But, a segment of rightwing pundits and Trump allies came out strongly behind the administration.

The release—originating from a DOJ led by key Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and many of the men shown in photographs have their identities obscured.

But some are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, allowed certain rightwing voices to launch the attack.

“It’s quite rich how the Democrats falsely accused Donald Trump of being a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” wrote conservative commentator Laura Loomer.

“New documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his spouse Hillary Clinton,” wrote lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Blackmail.”

Clinton Spokesperson Releases Statement

Bill Clinton has repeatedly stated he knew of no illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration has not been concealing these documents for months only to dump them late on a Friday to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña said in a comment.

“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they will try and conceal forever. Therefore they can publicize as many low-quality decades-old photos as they want, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.

Broader Conservative Comment Seems Subdued

Nonetheless, overall comment on the political right was comparatively muted following the release, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for action that preceded the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the files' release.

The commentator, who not long ago secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been one of the loudest advocates for a full release. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi specifically after a set of rightwing personalities were given physical binders of files that included no new information.
